European Motorcycle Market Sees Significant Sales Increase in 2023
According to a recent report by the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM), the European motorcycle market has experienced a substantial increase in sales during the first nine months of 2023. Key markets in the region saw a total of 873,985 new motorcycles registered from January to September, marking an impressive 11.8 percent growth compared to the same period in 2022.
Italy emerged as the strongest market for two-wheelers, with a growth rate of 19.4 percent and a total of 271,552 new registrations. Spain followed closely with a 13.4 percent increase and 154,019 new registrations. Germany and France also saw growth, with 9.6 percent and 8.7 percent respectively. The UK, however, experienced a slight decline of 0.4 percent with 89,806 registrations.
While motorcycles enjoyed a significant increase in sales, mopeds did not fare as well. Only 155,098 mopeds were registered during the first nine months of 2023, representing a 25 percent drop compared to the previous year. It's important to note that ACEM's report only includes data from France, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Spain. The categorization of mopeds varies across regions, with Europe generally considering them as L1eB and L2e vehicles.
ACEM's Secretary General, Antonio Perlot, highlighted the sustained interest in two-wheelers for both commuting and leisure purposes. He stated, "Strong growth of the European market in the first nine months highlights consumers' sustained long-term interest in powered two-wheelers, both for daily commuting and for leisure." The positive trend for motorcycles is expected to continue, with new models, including electric and internal combustion options, set to be introduced in 2024.
It's important to note that ACEM's report does not cover all brands in the European motorcycle industry. The report includes 18 manufacturers, such as BMW, Ducati, KTM, MV Agusta, Piaggio, Triumph, and the Japanese big four. New players, particularly those from China, are not represented in the report, suggesting that sales figures may be even higher than reported.
